Autoritär-populistische Parteien haben in fast allen liberalen Demokratien in Westeuropa ein Wählerpotential von ca. 20 Prozent der Stimmen. Viel wichtiger noch: Ein erheblicher Anteil der Weltbevölkerung wird von autoritären Populisten regiert. Die bekanntesten Namen sind Bolsonaro, Modi, Erdogan, Orban, Kaczyński, Maduro, Putin und bis vor Kurzem allen voran Trump. Das sind fast alles große Länder, was den autoritären Populismus so wirkmächtig für die internationale Ordnung macht. Der autoritäre Populismus hat sich in relativ kurzer Zeit global ausgebreitet.

Millions of people marched in almost every city in Chile in October and November 2019 to demand a new constitution. The speed with which these events occurred, as well as the nature of the political discussions, caused a schism in a country that had been regarded for many years as a model of good economic management, social stability, and foreign investment security. The slogan "It's not about 30 pesos; it's about 30 years!" called into question the conventional wisdom regarding economic growth and social development. What are some of the historical factors that explain such a dramatic shift?

In der Ökonomie war die sogenannte „credibility revolution“ der prägende Trend der letzten 15 bis 20 Jahre. Hierbei ging es darum, in empirischer Arbeit einen ganz starken Fokus auf die Etablierung kausaler Zusammenhänge zu legen. Dies führte, zum Teil, auch zu einer methodischen Verengung auf RCTs, also Feldexperimente (randomized controlled trials). Dies fand auch in der Verleihung des Nobelpreises 2020 an Banerjee, Duflo und Kremer – für die Entwicklung ihres experimentell basierten Ansatzes zur Bekämpfung der globalen Armut – seinen Niederschlag.

Clearly, the quality of a truly path-breaking work – like Weber’s legacy – is that it makes others, and literally thousands of others, think and develop new ideas. Weber asked the right questions. Whether one agrees with his answers or not, he paved the way for many fields of research that became distinct disciplines.
