Harriet Beecher Stowe lived in Brunswick, Maine from 1850 to 1852. It was and is a small town in coastal Maine, home to Bowdoin College, where Stowe’s husband was briefly a professor of theology. Harriet Beecher Stowe was not then famous. Neither was her husband.

Before the Capitol building in Washington, DC stands the largest equestrian statue in the United States. It depicts Ulysses S. Grant, president from 1869 to 1877 and the pivotal Northern General in the Civil War. The statue has a long history.

Michael Kimmage is Professor of History at the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. From 2014 to 2016, he served on the Secretary's Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. Department of State, where he held the Russia/Ukraine portfolio.
His research ranges across U.S., European and Russian history. His most recent book is The Abandonment of the West: The History of an Idea in American Foreign Policy, which appeared with Basic Books in April 2020. He is also the translator of Wolfgang Koeppen’s travelogue, Amerikafahrt, which was published as Journey through America by Bergbahn Books in 2012.
He was part of the work group of the CAS Research Focus “Transatlantic Cultures: America, Europe and the West“ and CAS Visiting Fellow in 2011 and 2013, collaborating with Michael Hochgeschwender (LMU) and Christof Mauch (LMU).
