In January 2024, about five months after the CAS Research Group “The Sound of Theatre” has finished with a three-day conference, I wrote to the fellows asking for some remarks in hindsight. Hindsight? Already, I stumble over the last word: why are so many words that we connect to knowledge or experience visual metaphors?

David Roesner is Professor for Theatre Studies at LMU Munich with a special focus on music theatre. His academic career includes stays at the Universities of Hildesheim, Exeter and Kent. Corresponding to his theoretical interest in the field, he also works as theatre musician.
In early 2018 Prof. Roesner was named visiting professor at the University of Sydney. From 2018 to 2022 he directed the DFG-project “Theatermusik heute als kulturelle Praxis”, followed up 2022/2023 by the CAS Research Group “The Sound of Theatre. Musical and Acoustemological Approaches to Contemporary Performance Practice in an International Context”.
His publications include: Composed Theatre (with Matthias Rebstock, Intellect, 2011); Theatre Noise (with Lynne Kendrick, CSP, 2012); Musicality in Theatre: Music as Model, Method and Metaphor in Theatre-Making (Ashgate, 2014); Theatermusik. Analysen und Gespräche (Theater der Zeit, 2019).
